Your checklist on how to prepare a room for a new carpet for a stress-free carpet/flooring fitting day.
When you prepare a room for a new carpet, you help everything run smoothly and ensure the best possible finish and choosing your new carpet is an exciting step towards refreshing your home, especially if you’re planning ahead for spring, Easter, or the upcoming bank holidays.
We’ve written a checklist to provide simple, practical guidance on how to prepare a room for a new carpet installation.
Clear the room (as much as possible)
Before your fitter arrives, try to remove furniture, personal belongings, and smaller items from the room. This includes:
- Chairs, tables, and freestanding furniture
- Lamps, plants, and ornaments
- Toys, boxes, and storage items
If you’re unsure about larger items like wardrobes or beds, let us know in advance so we can advise on the best approach for your space; we even offer a room clearing service, which includes uplift and disposal of old flooring so please ask us about this when you’re agreeing your fitting dates.
Take care of fragile items
Carpet fitting can involve some movement and lifting, so it’s best to remove:
- Pictures, mirrors, and artwork from walls
- Breakable items from shelves and windowsills
This helps prevent accidental damage and gives the fitter clear access to the room.
Clear access to your home and the room we’ll be working in
Make sure there’s a clear route from your front door to the room being carpeted. This allows flooring, underlay, and tools to be brought in easily and safely. If you have pets, it’s also a good idea to keep them in another room while fitting takes place.
Check sockets, doors & thresholds
If you have cables, extension leads, or floor lamps, unplug and move them out of the way. It’s also helpful to:
- Open internal doors where possible
- Let us know about tight door clearances or thresholds – we might advise you to remove the door
- Please always remember, a new carpet will (probably) sit higher than your old one, so consider this. (You may have to pay someone to plane the bottom of the door)
These small details help ensure a neat and professional finish.
What about the old carpet?
Although we don’t insist, it’s much easier if the old flooring or carpet has been removed prior to the fitters being on-site. If you’re unable to do this, the fitter can lift your existing carpet and underlay but please let us know beforehand so this can be arranged. If your room has been bare for a while, a quick sweep or vacuum beforehand is always helpful too.
Why preparation matters
The better the preparation, the better the final result!
Good preparation will help your fitter focus on what they do best: installing your new carpet to a high standard. It can also reduce fitting time, avoid delays, and ensure your new flooring looks fantastic from day one.
At Karpet Kingdom, we also offer a free home measuring service, which is especially useful for rooms with awkward layouts, alcoves, bay windows or if you’re running your carpet between more than one room or area (ie: a landing into a bedroom). Accurate measuring from the start helps everything run smoothly on fitting day.
Finally…
Whether you’re refreshing one room or planning a full home update, when you prepare a room properly it makes all the difference. If you have any questions before fitting day, our friendly showroom teams are always happy to help.
